Field Vocabulary
Every field develops a vocabulary. Medicine, engineering, law, and architecture all rely on terms that take on specific meanings inside the discipline. A shared vocabulary allows practitioners to discuss complex conditions without rebuilding the underlying concepts each time.
A precise vocabulary does more than save time. It separates things ordinary language fuses. Before a distinction exists, two conditions share one word and cannot be told apart; once it is drawn, they become independently observable, and a failure forming in one of them can be named before it grows loud enough to force attention. Other terms enter the vocabulary from the opposite direction: a case or a domain presents a condition the existing words do not reach, and a new term is built to name it. Both are how a discipline's language grows. Several of the terms below are close enough to be mistaken for one another, and the notes that distinguish them are doing the work the page exists to do. The difference between candor, transparency, credibility, and legitimacy is treated on its own in WSA-004 — What the Words Certify.

Admissibility
The condition under which a decision, action, or claim is permitted to proceed because its basis satisfies the requirements for legitimate evaluation. Admissibility does not determine whether a decision is correct; it determines whether the basis is sufficient to be evaluated at all. A basis becomes inadmissible when it cannot be verified, traced, examined independently, or corrected. This is distinct from evidentiary admissibility in litigation, which concerns whether evidence may be received by a tribunal.
Authority
The legitimate capacity to act on behalf of a system. Within the corpus, authority is not status, rank, popularity, or force. Authority exists where responsibility, consequence, evidence, and decision-making stay structurally connected.
Candor
Accurate disclosure of internal state. Candor certifies the sincerity of the speaker and nothing beyond it: a report of belief can be fully candid while the belief is wrong. Candor is the first and weakest of four terms institutions use interchangeably, separated in WSA-004.
Capture
The condition in which a system comes to serve an interest other than the reality it was built to track. Capture severs authority from consequence. The system continues producing decisions, while evidence and external conditions no longer reach the basis on which those decisions form. Capture is often invisible from inside, because the system's internal coherence is preserved even as its correspondence to reality is lost.
Coherence
The internal consistency of a system measured against its own reference rather than against reality. A system possesses coherence when its parts agree with one another, its records agree with its procedures, and its account of itself is consistent throughout. Coherence is distinct from correspondence. A system can preserve full internal coherence while its correspondence to reality is lost, which is why coherence alone cannot detect drift. Capture, and the audit that passes before failure, both turn on coherence retained while contact with reality is gone.
Consequence
The structural response reality produces when decisions interact with actual conditions. Consequence acts independently of preference, intention, authority, or belief.
Constraint
A condition that limits the responses available to a system. Constraints define what can occur, what cannot occur, and what costs accompany each available path.
Containment
The isolation of harmful influence while preserving the evidence required for understanding, accountability, and repair. Containment differs from removal. The objective is preservation of understanding alongside protection from further harm.
Correctability
The capacity of a system's reading to alter the system. Correctability asks whether correction is structurally possible at all: whether evidence, once held, retains a path to decision and behavior. It is one of the two components of Reality Contact, paired with Orientation, and it fails independently of that component. A system can read its position accurately and remain unable to act on the reading, and a system can retain the structural capacity to be altered while no longer reading the conditions that would alter it. Correctability is a structural property, not a capacity measure: it concerns whether the path exists, not how much remains along it.
Correction
The process by which reality alters an institution's understanding, decision, or behavior. Correction is the mechanism through which a system updates itself in response to evidence, consequence, or changing conditions.
Correction Capacity
The ability of a system to be altered by evidence before failure forces the change. Systems lose correction capacity before they lose function. The loss often stays invisible until consequences accumulate. Correction capacity is how much of that capacity remains and is spent on the way to the failure threshold; correctability is the prior structural question of whether the path to be altered exists at all.
Correspondence
The relationship between an institution's understanding and the reality it is attempting to describe, measure, or navigate. Correspondence is the present state of that alignment: how closely the system's reading matches actual conditions at a given moment. Internal coherence and correspondence are distinct. Systems can possess one while losing the other. Where correspondence is the state, verification is the process that tests for it.
Credibility
The belief an audience extends to a claim, person, or institution. Credibility is a state on the receiving side, produced by anything that produces belief, and it can be high while the thing believed is unfounded. Credibility and legitimacy decouple completely, which is the separation WSA-004 documents.
Decision Integrity
The condition in which evidence, authority, responsibility, and consequence stay connected throughout the decision process. A decision possesses integrity when its basis stays inspectable, traceable, and capable of correction.
Drift
The widening discrepancy between what a system understands and the conditions it actually faces. Drift accumulates when a system continues running against an outdated reference while believing its understanding is current.
Failure
The condition a system reaches when it can no longer produce admissible decisions, and consequence arrives without mediation. Failure is a structural threshold, not an event of magnitude. A system can continue functioning, producing output, and commanding authority well past the point at which it has lost the capacity to be corrected. Failure names the moment reality enforces what the system could no longer enforce on itself. Correction capacity is what a system spends on the way to this threshold.
Invariant
A property that is preserved across the transformations a system undergoes. An invariant is what does not change when conditions, descriptions, or frames of reference change. In the corpus, invariants identify the structure beneath surface variation: the conditions that must be satisfied for valid contact with reality regardless of the institutional, diagnostic, or decision layer in which a system is functioning. Foundational invariants underlie the propositions that derive from them.
Legitimacy
The property present in an authority, decision, or standard whose basis can withstand independent examination. Legitimacy is not consent, popularity, or formal position. It is the condition under which a claim to act can be evaluated against evidence and survive that evaluation, and it is preserved only while the system stays correctable: answerable to evidence and consequence outside its own account. Authority is the legitimate capacity to act; admissibility concerns legitimate evaluation; standards make legitimacy transferable beyond direct observation. The common element is that legitimacy answers to something external to the system asserting it.
Load
The cumulative demand a structure sustains while continuing to perform its function. Load is a property of the structure and its records, not of the people staffing it: it accumulates as unresolved deviations, deferred maintenance, and unreconciled trace, not as fatigue. Load is distinct from pressure. Pressure is demand acting on a system at a given moment; load is the accumulated demand already present in a system. A structure can absorb pressure it has capacity for and accumulate load it cannot release. Behavior under load is the test that separates rugged flexibility from arrangements that perform well only when demand is light.
Load-Bearing Commitment
A structural commitment on which a system's durable correction depends. A load-bearing commitment is not a value, an aspiration, or a stated principle; it is a commitment the architecture actually rests on, so that straining it strains the structure. Where a Test is the diagnostic question paired with such a commitment, the load-bearing commitment is the thing the test reads against: what the test surfaces as honored or under strain. A commitment is load-bearing when the system cannot abandon it without the structure changing in kind.
Nomination
The selection of the object to be evaluated: the joint, surface, boundary, executor, system, claim, or condition that an instrument then inspects, verifies, or certifies. Nomination is the prior act beneath the other evaluative terms. Standing asks whether a named thing may enter a decision; admissibility asks whether its basis is sufficient; verification asks whether it corresponds to reality. Each of these presupposes that the object under evaluation has already been correctly chosen. Nomination is that choice. It is not standing, admissibility, or verification, and it fails on a different axis than any of them: where those terms concern a wrong answer about the object, nomination concerns whether the right object was selected to begin with. An instrument can run correctly and return a valid result that does not answer the question that mattered, because the object it was given was not the one that should have been evaluated, a failure none of the downstream terms can detect, since each begins only after nomination has fixed what they operate on. Nomination can fail, and its failure is a structural error prior to evaluation rather than an error within it.
Orientation
The capacity to maintain contact with relevant reality under changing conditions. Orientation is concerned with present position relative to reality. Prediction of future events is a separate activity. Within Reality Contact, orientation is the component that reads reality, paired with correctability, the component that lets the reading alter the system; the two fail independently.
Pressure
Demand acting upon a system. Pressure may originate from urgency, incentives, politics, economics, social forces, scarcity, competition, or consequence. Pressure is not inherently harmful. Its effects depend on the architecture receiving it.
Propagation
The process through which effects travel through a system. Errors, pressures, incentives, and consequences all propagate. Understanding their routes is necessary for understanding system behavior.
Reading
The present interpretation a person, institution, or system holds regarding its position relative to reality. A reading forms from the signals, references, assumptions, constraints, and evidence currently available. Decisions act on readings, not on reality directly. A sound reading maintains correspondence to actual conditions; a degraded reading preserves confidence while losing contact with what it is attempting to describe. Before a decision becomes a choice, it becomes a reading.
Reality Contact
The standing condition in which a system remains answerable to reality. Reality Contact is an umbrella property requiring two components that fail independently: Orientation, the capacity to read reality, and Correctability, the capacity of that reading to alter the system. Either component can fail while the other holds; a system can read its position accurately and be unable to act on the reading, or retain the capacity to be altered while no longer reading the conditions that would alter it. Reality Contact is the condition in which neither component has failed.
Reference
The frame against which a system measures its position. Every act of orientation is relative to a reference. A system reads its position, its accuracy, and its drift against the reference it keeps. When the reference is sound, contact with reality is possible; when the reference is outdated and the system does not recognize this, drift accumulates against a frame the system still trusts. Correspondence is measured against reality; coherence is measured against the system's own reference. The two diverge whenever the reference has stopped tracking the conditions it was built to represent.
Refusal Doctrine
The principle that an action must be refused when the conditions required for its admissibility are absent, and that the refusal is recorded as a structural finding rather than a matter of discretion. The Refusal Doctrine specifies that authority does not convert an unresolved basis into a resolved one: a superior may direct that action proceed, but the direction is logged and the basis is recorded as it stood. Where Structural Refusal is the act and Refusal Infrastructure is the architecture that makes the act available, the Refusal Doctrine is the rule that determines when refusal is required. It is a published criterion, not personal judgment, which is what lets a practitioner refuse by pointing to it.
Refusal Infrastructure
The architecture that makes structural refusal available before the moment it is needed. Where structural refusal is the act and the Refusal Doctrine is the rule that determines when refusal is required, refusal infrastructure is the standard and the record-keeping that let a practitioner refuse an inadmissible action by pointing to published criteria rather than to personal judgment alone. The Structural Authority Gate and its Refusal Doctrine are one such published criterion: a practitioner can refuse by pointing to a gate that did not resolve Present. The refusal does not depend on the individual's courage, reputation, or willingness to absorb the cost of refusing alone. The architecture absorbs part of the load, and makes refusal a structural response rather than an act of individual nerve.
Standards
Architectures that allow trust, verification, and inspection to function beyond direct personal observation. Standards specify conditions for evaluation before decisions are made. They make trust transferable across scale.
Standing
The recognized position from which a person, record, signal, claim, or authority can legitimately enter a decision process and affect its outcome. This is distinct from standing to sue in litigation, which concerns a party's right to bring a claim before a court. Within the corpus, standing differs from authority: authority is the capacity to act on behalf of a system; standing determines whether a particular actor, signal, or piece of evidence is admitted into consideration. Systems often fail when signals retain accuracy but lose standing, preventing correction from reaching the point where action occurs.
Structural Refusal
The refusal of an action because the conditions required for its admissibility are absent. Structural refusal does not depend on preference. The action is refused because the basis required to support it cannot be produced.
Test
The diagnostic question paired with a structural commitment, applied to a specific decision, action, or state to determine whether it honors or strains that commitment. A test does not by itself produce a verdict. It may return a state or classification, but it surfaces whether a commitment is under strain, and the result is read together with the others rather than in isolation. A test differs from verification. Verification asks whether a claim corresponds to reality; a test asks whether an action stays within a structural limit the system has accepted. One evaluates correspondence; the other evaluates fidelity.
Threshold
The point at which correcting a system stops being an adjustment and becomes a reconstruction. Before a threshold, the effort required to correct is proportionate and the disruption minor, which is also why the correction is rarely made: nothing yet looks wrong enough to justify it. After it, the same correction requires reopening roles, records, and decisions that hardened into precedent under load. A threshold sounds no alarm and is recognized only after it has been crossed. Restoration past a threshold stays possible, but its scope, cost, and the willingness it demands all change.
Trace
The preserved record of what occurred, why it occurred, and how the decision was reached. Trace allows reconstruction, accountability, learning, and correction.
Transparency
The claim that inspection is possible. Transparency as a structural property is real: independent surfaces exist and answer to parties other than the institution. But the word self-certifies, and an institution can announce transparency while controlling which signals reach an observer. The distinction between the claim and the property is drawn in WSA-004.
Verification
The process of determining whether a claim corresponds to reality. Where correspondence is the present state of alignment, verification is the test that proves or disproves it by running the claim against an independent inspection surface. Verification differs from agreement. A system may agree with itself completely while failing verification against external conditions.
Field Vocabulary is a living document. Definitions may become more precise as the field develops, while staying accountable to the architecture from which they arise.
