Whether the condition can become representable
Where This Fits
Observability is a supplier part with a house-machined joint inside it, and this page is the third of the companion manuals. Its siblings ask whether an account can be checked against something beyond itself, and whether the path from evidence to decision can later be reconstructed. This page's question comes earlier in the corrective problem: can the condition become representable to the architecture at all?
Everything a corrective architecture does begins with what it can receive. Before a condition can be checked, admitted, or acted on, it has to exist for the architecture as an input: something an instrument can read, a category can name, a record can preserve. Most institutional machinery assumes this step has already happened. This page is about the cases where it hasn't, and about the line that decides.
A corrective architecture can admit only what its instruments and its language can represent.
Whose Machinery This Is
The formal concept belongs to control theory, and the grant is already on the record.
Observability, in its modern state-space form, was given to engineering by Rudolf Kalman: the question of whether a system's internal state can be inferred from its outputs, made precise enough to prove answers about. The corpus claims none of that machinery, and the Reality Contact page records the grant in full alongside its twin, controllability. What the corpus machines is the joint where the supplied concept meets institutions: not whether a state can be inferred in principle, but where the limit lies for a particular architecture, built of particular instruments and a particular vocabulary, deciding particular things.
The Boundary
The house-machined part is a line, and the corpus gives it a name: the observability boundary.
Every corrective architecture has a reachable input space, the set of conditions it can receive in a form its pathways can process. The observability boundary is the limit of that space. Conditions inside it can acquire standing; conditions outside it cannot, no matter how real they are, because no admissible representation of them exists for a pathway to receive. And the boundary is a property of the architecture, never of the world: it is drawn by the instruments the architecture reads and the representational language it keeps, and it moves when either changes. Add an assay, and conditions cross into view. Flatten a distinction in the paperwork, and conditions that ordinary observation could see slide back out.
The boundary moves when the instruments or the language move. It does not move because anyone wishes it would.
Two Ways to Be Outside
A condition can sit outside the boundary for two structurally different reasons, and the corpus refuses to average the verdicts.
In the first, the discriminating observable does not exist anywhere. No instrument, measurement, or vocabulary in any workshop has yet made the condition representable, inside the institution or outside it. The condition is real, and reality enforces it the whole time; what is absent is a signal, never the state of the world. The corpus calls this frontier absence, and no design of the corrective architecture can fix it, because there is nothing yet to admit. The remedy is scientific: a new observation channel has to open, and historically it tends to open outside the affected institution, often in pursuit of an unrelated question. An institution is not chargeable for failing to measure what no science of its period could.
In the second, the observable exists. It is available to ordinary observation, or already in use in some other workshop, language, or trade, and the institution's own representational language does not preserve it in a form its decision machinery can admit. A distinction that reality maintains and the paperwork flattens. The corpus calls this representational exclusion, and here the remedy is design: widen the vocabulary, add the field, require the assay, preserve the distinction at the point of record. An institution can legitimately be held to this one, because the observable was reachable with the instruments of its own period.
The two do not compensate. Absence of an observable that did not yet exist does not erase the separate failure to preserve distinctions that were already available, and the ability to observe a distinction does not imply the institution should have known what it meant. One episode can contain both, and each gets its own verdict.
Why the Boundary Matters
The boundary decides what can ever get through the front door, and it fails silently.
Downstream machinery can be excellent and the boundary still governs. An honest check processes only what enters it. A well-designed pathway admits only what can be represented. So an institution can run immaculate inquiries, close its questions cleanly, and stay wrong about the condition that matters, because the condition never became an input anywhere in the design. The failures this produces look impossible afterward, and the corpus keeps a hard distinction ready for exactly that hindsight: whether the condition was outside every boundary of its era, or only outside this institution's, because it drew its categories too coarsely to keep a difference the world was maintaining.
What Observability Cannot Do

Observability can bring a condition into the architecture's reachable space. It cannot establish that an account of the condition is true; checking against a basis beyond the system is verification's work. It cannot admit the represented condition into a decision; that is standing, and something can be representable, even represented, and still be refused entry. It cannot make an admitted finding change anything; that is authority, and force. It cannot preserve the path for later reconstruction; that is traceability, with memory continuity beneath it. And it cannot correct anything by itself, because making something visible is not the same as making it consequential. Half of what this laboratory studies is the distance between those two.

Making something visible is not the same as making it consequential. What cannot become visible has no chance at either.
