Reading this page: what the laboratory can do, by stage of development
Maturity increases left to right. Each instrument advances only as its characterization completes.
A constraint science shows up before the world thinks it needs it. The metallurgy that explains metal fatigue was written after the Comet aircraft came apart, not before. The national fire-hose coupling standard was published after Baltimore burned, not while the city was still whole. Preparedness work almost always looks early, because its whole purpose is to be ready before the failure it addresses becomes undeniable. That is the position this laboratory is in, and it is on purpose.
So this page reads as a map of stages rather than a catalog of finished products. Each instrument is placed by how far its characterization has actually progressed, and it advances only as that work completes. The laboratory says plainly what each one can and cannot yet do. Being early is not the same as being unfinished, and it is not something the work apologizes for. The coupling gets written before the fire, or it is not there when the fire comes.
The instruments below are staged for a set of failures that are becoming more legible, not less. The work is being readied now so that it exists, and can be trusted, at the point it is needed.
Realis develops instruments for examining how institutions maintain, or lose, contact with reality at the points where consequential decisions are made.
Realis states what each instrument can and cannot yet do. That discipline is the point of the laboratory.
Two kinds of capability. What follows separates engagements, which are ways the published work leaves the laboratory and meets an audience, from instruments, which are diagnostic tools under scientific characterization. Both are staged by readiness. They are not the same thing, and Realis does not present them as though they were. An engagement teaches a way of seeing. An instrument produces a reading, and a reading is only as trustworthy as the characterization behind it.

How the work leaves the laboratory
These are mature and deliverable today. They are built from the published corpus, they teach a way of examining an institution, and they make no diagnostic claim about the organization that hosts them.
Keynotes
Five talks, each taking one structural property to the bottom.
Dead Reckoning (50 min) asks whether an institution can still tell that it is drifting.
The One Place (30 min) asks whether the one condition everything else depends on is actually present.
The Instrument Stays Level (30 min) separates the four properties routinely confused with resilience, and asks what was optimized away.
Eight Tenths of a Millimeter (25 min) examines the failure in which honest people reason correctly about an object that has changed underneath them.
Worse Than Empty (17 min) asks whether a record can still warn anyone.

Working sessions
Any keynote can be extended into a facilitated 90-minute session on the same day. Participants bring one real artifact from their own environment and apply the property from the talk to it. The organization is not being assessed and no finding leaves the room. Sessions require pre-work: the artifact has to be identified in advance and present on the day.

Stage 01 · Instruments · Available Now
Characterized enough to apply
Structural Authority Gate, diagnostic. The Structural Authority Gate (SAG) is the laboratory's most mature diagnostic instrument, and remains under active characterization. It examines a decision boundary against six structural conditions and reports where decisions proceed without authority that can be independently verified.
Decision supportSAG is intended to inform consequential decisions, not determine them. Realis applies the instrument, reports what it finds, and states the confidence and limits of each finding. Its findings should be considered alongside domain expertise, available evidence, and institutional judgment.
SAG is open through three engagements, each a different way into the same instrument. An Executive Briefing applies the instrument to a described boundary and opens into bounded discussion. A Facilitated Workshop has participants apply the instrument to a boundary in their own environment. A Boundary Diagnostic is a focused written diagnosis of a single boundary, delivered with its confidence characterization stated.
These are the laboratory's current operational capabilities, its state at this point in its development rather than a fixed catalog. Additional instruments open to the field only as their characterization is completed. The research itself is open now: the full
corpus of publications can be read today, and collaboration on open research questions is welcome.
Stage 02 · Instruments · In Development
Under active characterization
These instruments are in active research. They are not yet offered for applied use.
Not what is missingThis stage is the laboratory's live work, shown openly. The same rigor that develops an instrument is what makes its eventual application trustworthy, so the development is documented rather than hidden.
Reality-Contact Surface Selection (RSS). RSS is a research instrument under active characterization. It is being studied to determine where it can and cannot resolve why an institutional claim loses contact with reality. Realis is currently mapping the boundary of that resolving power through frozen, pre-registered protocols, including independent and blind evaluation. Until that characterization is complete, RSS is not offered as an applied diagnostic.
Transferability and reliability. A diagnostic instrument becomes a laboratory capability, rather than the work of a single practitioner, only when a trained operator other than its developer can apply it and reach the same reading. Realis is characterizing the inter-rater reliability of SAG as part of the same program that tests its scientific validity. This work determines when SAG can be applied by trained practitioners beyond the laboratory itself.

Domain-wide structural assessment. Evaluation of authority clarity, detection integrity, and corrective viability across a full decision environment, once single-boundary diagnosis is fully characterized.
Practitioner training and credentialing. Structured training for operators outside the laboratory, contingent on demonstrated instrument transferability.
Independence. All engagements are independent and do not modify published work. Participation does not confer certification, endorsement, or advisory status unless explicitly stated. Realis does not sell conclusions, and support for the laboratory does not purchase influence over its findings.
