What These Are

The Load-Bearing Commitments are the point where Restorative Realism stops being only a way of seeing and becomes something a system can be tested against. They are the commitments repair keeps encountering when reality pushes back: the conditions a restoration has to satisfy to be real instead of merely finished.

A commitment is load-bearing when bending it makes the whole structure less able to correct itself.

Inside the standards, each of the fourteen functions as a diagnostic instrument, with a test that can be run against a specific decision. On this page they are presented for reading instead of scoring, but the tests are kept in their working form, because the test is what keeps a commitment from softening into a slogan. A principle you cannot fail is not load-bearing. Each of these can be failed, and the failure is observable.

Discovered or Authored

A set of fourteen commitments placed beneath a body of work invites a fair question: were these chosen because they were preferred, or found because they kept appearing?

Provisionally heldThe corpus treats them as discoveries provisionally held. They were not selected because they were desirable. They were retained because they repeatedly survived contact with cases, practice, and lived experience. They appear wherever durable restoration succeeds, and their violation appears wherever restoration fails. They stay open to revision if reality demonstrates otherwise.

This is the same standing the ethic upstream earns, and it is earned the same way: through trace and tested consequence and the record of what happens when systems are built without these commitments in place. The commitments are not asserted as universal law. They are the patterns that kept showing up when repair, stewardship, failure, and long-duration responsibility were examined closely enough and long enough.

Their standing is the standing a seasoned builder gives to the rules of a trade: not proven in a laboratory, but earned at the bench across enough failed joints that ignoring them is how you get hurt.

A master keeps them because the ones who did not are the cautionary stories. They stay in force until a case shows one of them wrong, and then that one is revised. The reader is invited to inspect the claim, not to assent to it.

What They Preserve

Beneath the fourteen is a pattern in what they protect. The commitments guard the things institutions routinely lose under pressure: memory, trace, accountability, correction, stewardship, and the worth of the people a system exists to serve. What these have in common is that pressure rewards forgetting them. The deepest claim under the fourteen is that some things must stay visible, traceable, and preservable even when load makes forgetting them expedient.

The sharpest example of that pattern concerns people.

A system violates Restorative Realism when a person’s worth becomes conditional on utility, productivity, status, compliance, ideology, market value, or administrative convenience.

These conditions may influence decisions, but they cannot determine whether a person possesses worth. Restoration begins from the premise that human value precedes usefulness. The commitments below are the structural form that premise takes, and the structural form of every other thing that must survive contact with pressure.

Most readers will agree with that sentence in the abstract. The commitments earn their place because systems betray it under pressure, and they betray it through specific, observable moves. The tests are how the betrayal is caught.

The Fourteen

Each commitment is given in its working form: the commitment, what it protects, and the test that determines whether a given action honors or strains it. No single test decides anything in isolation. They are read together, and against the conditions in front of you.

1. Repair Is Not Regression. A system retains the cause of harm so repair is real. Returning to a prior state is not repair if the cause is erased on the way back.

2. Preservation Is Not Reintegration. Trace is preserved without restoring harmful influence. Keeping the record is not the same as returning the thing that caused harm to a position of effect.

3. Form Follows Responsibility. Form is shaped to the responsibility it must bear. How a thing is built should follow from who answers for it, not from convenience or appearance.

4. Coherence Must Be Earned. Structural alignment precedes surface calm. A system that looks settled before its conflicts are resolved has bought quiet at the cost of truth.

5. Usefulness Is Not Worth. Worth precedes usefulness and is not produced by it. Dignity cannot be sacrificed for expedience or instrumental gain.

6. Accountability Must Be Traceable. Consequence leaves a reconstructable record. Accountability that cannot be reconstructed afterward is indistinguishable from its absence.

7. Compromise Must Serve the Outcome. A compromise that degrades the result is a loss wearing the look of a settlement.

8. Formatting Is Not Resolution. Polish does not substitute for repair. A cleaner presentation of an unresolved problem is not progress on the problem.

9. Preserve the Rupture. The break itself is evidence, and erasing it destroys what it records. Removing the break removes the record of what broke.

10. Values Require Proportion. A value pursued past its proportion becomes a harm in its own right. No single value overrides the structural requirements that keep the rest in balance.

11. If It Cannot Survive Memory, It Cannot Be Trusted. What survives only while unexamined was never trustworthy, only unexamined.

12. Competence Is the Foundation. Load-bearing decisions rely on verified capacity. Good intention does not substitute for demonstrated skill where the decision is consequential.

13. Build With What You Have. A plan that depends on capacity you do not have is a wish, not a design. Design reflects the resources, time, and capacity actually present.

14. The Build Will Testify. Every decision enters lineage. What is built becomes the record that later stewards inherit and read, regardless of what was intended at the time.

A bridge shows how this works. Load never disappears; it travels. Relieve one member and its share moves to the next path the structure can find. The joint that just went quiet has transferred its burden onto another member, often one nobody is watching. That quiet joint is frequently where the bridge ultimately fails, not the loud one. The question is never only whether a strain was relieved, but where the load went.

This is also why the commitments themselves do not compete. Compression does not argue with tension. Each is a real load the structure must carry, and if one appears to win, something has been overloaded. The commitments work the same way. They are simultaneous structural requirements, not values to be negotiated against one another. What appears to be a conflict between commitments is usually a structure under competing loads.

When two commitments appear to conflict, the first question is whether the design can be changed so both stay true. Where no such design exists, the unresolved strain is made explicit and preserved, not hidden.

This is what proportion means in the tenth commitment. Proportion is not a search for the right compromise. It is the refusal to dress a tradeoff as a resolution: name the strain that is left, keep it in the record, and leave it visible for the steward who inherits the structure.

How they are readThe commitments are evaluated together and contextually. No single test result authorizes anything on its own. One strained commitment signals instability and calls for a closer look. Multiple violations indicate structural failure in progress. Because the commitments are load-bearing rather than independent, strain relieved at one commitment may surface at another. The procedure for testing whether a claimed cost-free resolution genuinely dissolved a tension or merely relocated the strain to an uninspected commitment is specified in RST-LBC-DX-001, the Load-Transfer Discriminator.

They are not applied separately but read as a structure. Inside the standards, this evaluation is bounded by custody and authorization rules; on their own, the commitments diagnose, they do not execute. The commitments are specified as a citable diagnostic instrument in RST-LBC-001, and the operational form, with the authorization gates and the Decision Flow sequence that govern when a finding may lead to action, is set out in Chapter 11 of the RST Field Manual. Where Reality Pushes Back

A reader who reaches the end of the fourteen is owed an answer to the obvious question: why these, and not some other list a thoughtful person might prefer?

The answer is that they were not chosen for their appeal. They are the places where structures built into reality keep failing in the same way. Load a structure past its limit and it does not fail at random. The failures appear in the same specific places across structures that share nothing else. These commitments are an account of those recurring points. They are not rules imposed on the structure. They are the structure's own load limits, found the way any limit is found, by loading until something gives and noting where it gave.

The commitments are identified by what each one protects: trace, memory, proportion, competence, worth, the cause of a harm. They are not named for correctability. The finding is separate. Across cases, the structures that violated those independently described commitments are the structures in which loss of correctability repeatedly appears. That is the through-line beneath all fourteen. Erase the cause of a harm and you cannot repair it. Let worth become conditional on usefulness and you lose the standard that would have told you something was wrong. Trade trace for speed and you forfeit the record correction would have needed. The particular commitment differs; the failure does not. In each case the structure keeps going, often looking healthier than before, while the capacity that would let it recover quietly drains away.

The cost of that is not always felt at the time. It may arrive at once, or it may wait years, surfacing only when the structure is finally asked to correct something and discovers it no longer can. This is what makes the commitments easy to bend and hard to respect: the bending is cheap in the moment, and the cost emerges later, often in a different place than it was incurred. A durable structure that repeatedly violates a commitment and proves able to correct under genuine test would count against the claim.

As far as we can determine, this pattern is consistent. We do not claim it as a law. The regularity we report is qualitative: the same describable failures in the same places, not a measured tolerance. We claim that we keep finding these limits in the same places, across cases separated by domain, scale, and decades, and that we have not yet found a durable structure that violated them and kept its ability to correct. We treat that as real until reality demonstrates otherwise. That is the standard every other claim on this page answers to, and this one answers to it too.

Most values statements describe a group. These attempt to describe what restoration keeps requiring of anyone.
